Black Bamboo

Phyllostachys Nigra
"Black Bamboo"

I am a rapidly growing and strikingly beautiful bamboo. My leaves are small and delicate, bursting forth in a plumes mass, but my most unique characteristic is the beautiful black color of my older culms. This makes me a very popular choice for privacy screens or creating a classic bamboo grove. The black color of my culms develops over about a year's span of time, my shoots are green when they first emerge to develop leaves.

I am stately and erect, standing tall to show off my lovely dark culms to the world. I can reach 30 - 40 feet in height, and my culms may reach 1 1/2" in diameter under favorable conditions. I am sensitive to salts and minerals in the air, water and soil - these may burn the tips of my leaves.
