Gigantochloa Atroviolacea Giant Black Bamboo

Gigantochloa Atter

I am a large bamboo, reaching heights of 70 feet with 6 inch culms. I have long been cultivated in Indonesia for construction and musical instruments, since my culms are long and straight.

I am known only in cultivation, since there has been no recorded flowering of my species. It is speculated that my species is not threatened with demise by gregarious flowereing as others are, due to the selection by indigegous peoples over the millenia, resulting in forms that exist only in a vegatative state. A unique designation, indeed!

A productive clump of my species can yield many exceptional tasting shoots for eating.
