Gigantochloa Atroviolacea Giant Black Bamboo

Guadua Angustifolia
"Thorny Bamboo"

The largest of the New World bamboos, attaining heights of 100 feet with culms that can reach 9 inces in diameter, I come from northeastern South America, prominent in Colombia and Equador. I thrive there on large expanses of land dominating entire forests. I have thorny basal branches, so watch out for me!

My uses range from construction of modest homes of the indiginous peoples as well as multimillion-dollar architectural masterpeices due to my outstanding mechanical properties. I am very strong and easily workable, but most notably, I am highly resistant to insect attach and rot, unlike most other tropical bamboos.

I dislike frost, and thrive within a temperature range of 63 to 75°F (17 to 24°C). I also do best in very wet environments with high rainfall.

My roots have an interesting habit. They are classified as the clumping type, but I am definately a more rambling or leptomorphic bamboo than most clumpers. My rhizomes can spread three feet or more from the last culm before sending up a new shoot. For this reason, I should be considered carefully when including me in your landscape plans. I will need plenty of room!
