Dendrocalamus Asper
"Asper Bamboo"

I am a very attractive ornamental, native to Southease Asia and widely cultivated throughout tropical Asia. I do well also in more temperate areas, since I am more cold tolerant than most of my genus.

I can grow to 100 feet tall, although I will not reach this height unless in optimal tropical conditions. My culms can reach 8 inches in diameter and are used extensively for construction and paper pulp.

My leaves are long and broad, shining with a glossy bright green. I could make a good contrasting companion to a smaller, more delicate leaved bamboo like Mexican Weeping (Otatea Acuminata Aztecorum) or Costa Rican Weeping (Chusquea Coronalis), although I will soon dwarf either of these beauties.

Many people plant my variety for my large and excellent tasting shoots. A single shoot of mine can weigh as much as 16 lbs or more!
